My auto-DJ software is getting really very good at keeping a kickass mix going 24/7.

NB: I thought the US was going to slide into active guerilla conflict and/or the fracturing of the union, but political trends are giving me some hope that extremism is being rejected by the masses. We aren't out of the woods, and again if we don't have our democracy shattered, it's by the skin of our teeth. But there's reason to have hope, I guess.

There's no predictive theory of history and I've been wrong many times in the past, but if we get by without global hot war from this one, it's going to be by the skin of our teeth.

Analogies are tricky because history doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. Putin is making all the same mistakes as Nicholas II, and (based on recent reporting) is facing a guerilla resistance campaign. Also his opposition has a charismatic leader - not exiled, but imprisoned, but what's the difference?

An aggressive, brutal invasion campaign by an authoritarian in Europe while an unrelenting pursuit of global empire pushes forward in Asia - both involving, apparently, massive human rights violations; torture, rape, forced labor, mass detention of minority groups.

What year am I referring to?

My neph is building his first PC and I haven't fucked around with Windows in ages. And damn, for how much he's worked to save up to build this thing, it feels silly to have that much going towards the OS.

I'm avoiding asking about piracy because I can only imagine they make it a giant pain in the ass now, with how connected the OS is compared to the old days.

How do people get new copies of windows these days? Do you really have to drop $120 for a license for Home Edition? Wasn't there some way to get it legit through Microsoft for free a while back?

It’s kind of sad watching chunks of Fedi having to relearn lessons from the 90’s like “running a community website is hard, and the ‘community’ part is harder than the ‘website’ part”

And “any entitled, demanding users in the community will tend to rapidly push the people donating their time and money to run the site to just pack up and quit”

Maybe don’t be a dick to your instance admins and mods — when it’s not worth it to run a community as a volunteer, corps end up doing it for profit, and we’ve already seen how that pans out

sad to see this instance go, even though i havent been super active for a while, it had a bunch of cool people on it. anyone have a similar instance to migrate to?

"Is it a good TV show" and "do I want to watch it" are questions with very little overlap in the answers

uspol, total shitpost but very much not

"It will be the most Trump thing ever if he gets indicted for his handling of documents he could have declassified if he had even a modicum of discipline and the most DOJ thing ever to indict him for this instead of for leading a coup."

(stolen from twitter.com/matthewamiller/sta )

All these things read to me very much like "this is what you get when you primarily hire developers and don't balance it with operations/security folks".

I have had SO many discussions in my career with developers about why they couldn't get SSH access to production instances.

OK, this is TERRIFYINGLY BAD:
With twitter's head count, I'd find 5% terrifying, but 50%?!?
