if i was joe biden, the president would you send me money?

Elon now hanging out in Libs of TikTok's replies making ableist comments and bashing his former staffer for correcting him. #technology #twitter #TwitterMigrate #tech #elon

Simply the absolute best advice. The next time someone asks me how they can become a better writer – and a better person! – I'm going to show them this letter.

In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice.

Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond.

His reply was a doozy.

i feel like Stan Lee's cameo in every Avengers movie really overshadowed my cameo in every Avengers movie

What’s going on with twitter right now is pretty disturbing, but it’s *also* the most effective “learn by watching” lesson in resilient system breakdown I’ve ever seen in public. I hope young engineers are watching, because you normally don’t get this kind of “what not to do” lesson without working for a huge tech company.

I'm afraid a prominent wildlife/nature content scraper has arrived on the fediverse: They post other people's videos, GIFs, etc., uncredited and without context or image descriptions. This behaviour is bad enough on its own, but it can also promote scientific misinformation and bad wildlife interaction practices.

I don't think their behaviour is against m.s rules, but I highly recommend #MastoAdmin / #FediAdmin people suspend their account.

Sneakernet, banned books, etc.

Here's a little project I want to work on, and it involves this little solid state drive in my hand.

Everyone knows what sneakernet is, right? Pop data onto a storage medium of any sort; pass it onto another person? Throw a bunch of tapes and/or disks into a box; drive them down the highway to another location? Easy way of passing forbidden/banned/hot materials around without drawing attention by using the internet?

What I want to do is gather various media... banned books, counterculture zines, punk music (or any kind of music that can be subversive!), underground movies, underground comics, hacker knowledge, the works... gather it all onto this drive, and be able to share and pass it around to others. All without having to worry about a site going down, being inaccessible due to lack of network access, or having to flounder through tons of bookmarks. Just plug it in, copy the goods to another USB stick, or add the books and zines to an eBook reader or whatever, or add that music to a phone.

But there's one thing: I'm seeking some help in gathering materials for this project, so I'm asking my friends here if they can help out with providing materials!

Send me links to stuff you think would be great for this Sneakernet project! I have 500GB to work with currently but will be bumping that to 1 or 2TB soon!

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.

@shoeberto @ajroach42 "take something cool and suck out all of the humanity of it that makes it cool" is a business model that needs to have eyes in the back of its head because we’re coming for it.

My wife is an ornithologist so I wanted to ask if anyone knows of any good science or bird mastodon instances.

I went to help rescue a swarm of bees this summer. It was on a kids swing on the edge of a cornfield and just up the road was Burts Bees. I figured it's where they came from and prepared to move it.
As I moved in closer I realised with horror that rumours of Burts proclivities were reality, as something wasn't right. Each bee, examined one by one, had a massive gaping anus. Burt was fucking the bees.

Wait, Eli Lilly stock took a dive and took other pharma stocks with it, because of a fake tweet? Is the Twitter fiasco going to show the entire establishment has no clothes?
